Food

One of her biggest strengths is her cooking. She prepares an impressive variety of dishes, from nasi lemak and bak kut teh to homemade bak chang. She also willingly cooks for my husband and visiting family members.

That said, her approach to confinement food is much less traditional than I expected. Her version of “confinement food” is often regular home-cooked dishes with ginger and sesame oil added. She's easygoing and prefers mothers to tell her what they’d like to eat, but as a first-time mum recovering postpartum, I was hoping to rely more on her experience to guide what would best support my recovery.

Many of the dishes were comforting and reminded us of home, especially as we’re living in the UK. However, they often felt more like everyday comfort food than meals specifically designed for postpartum recovery.

She also prepared red date tea daily, although I found it much more diluted than the version my mother-in-law makes. When I asked, she explained that she intentionally kept the soups and tea lighter because my baby had jaundice and she didn’t want my diet to be too “heaty”. I appreciate that this is one school of thought, and I followed her advice because I trusted her experience. However, by the end of almost a month, several family members commented that I still looked very pale. After my mother-in-law started making concentrated beef essence for me, my colour noticeably improved within about a week. I can’t say whether the two were directly related, but that was my experience.

One area that could be improved is meal planning. Groceries were often requested at short notice, resulting in my husband making repeated supermarket trips every few days. In London, a trip to an Asian supermarket can easily take over 30 mins drive each way, so better planning would have been greatly appreciated. We also noticed quite a bit of food waste. Our first grocery shop together cost over £300++, followed by additional shopping again the same week, which surprised both us and our family.

Finally, we had to speak to her about taking greater care of our new kitchen. Our brand-new sink was scratched after fish was descaled and deboned in it using various tools. While accidents happen and this could have been avoided if done on a chopping board instead, we were disappointed that she wasn’t more apologetic when we raised the issue.

Baby Care

Baby care is, of course, the main responsibility of a confinement nanny. She clearly loves babies and has a warm, caring nature. As first-time parents, we learnt practical skills from her, such as bathing, holding and soothing our newborn. Her experience also allowed her to provide useful comparisons with other babies, which we found reassuring.

That said, we generally relied more on advice from our midwife, health visitor and doctors on feeding guidance whenever hers differed from theirs.

Unfortunately, we ended our arrangement before the first month was completed due to two serious safety incidents. On two separate occasions, we found her asleep while bottle-feeding our baby. Her body had slumped over, her arm had gone limp while holding him, and during one incident the bottle was still in our baby’s mouth. After the second incident, we no longer felt it was safe to leave our baby in her care and made the difficult decision to end the contract early.

We also observed that baby bottles were cleaned promptly but not sterilised before use. While she was very quick to wash and return my pump parts, including at night, we expected the feeding equipment to be sterilised consistently, particularly for a newborn. This was another aspect of baby care that concerned us.

I appreciated having her by my side during the final moment of labour. She supported me through contractions with massage and made sure I ate after delivery. In the early days postpartum, she also helped me with very personal aspects of recovery, such as cleaning me when my stitches were too painful and helping me freshen up when I wasn’t ready to shower. Those were acts of care that I genuinely appreciated. Her postnatal massages were another highlight. I found her techniques effective and beneficial, although they could be quite firm and occasionally left bruising. She was also enthusiastic in recommending her massage sessions, which at times felt a little hard-selling. Where I struggled most was our communication style. She is very chatty, and during almost every 90-minute to 2-hour massage she would talk continuously. While I understand she was away from home and likely enjoyed the company, those sessions were often my opportunity to rest, and I found it difficult to ask for quiet time. I also found some of her conversations emotionally unhelpful during such a vulnerable period. She repeatedly warned me not to be upset if my milk “didn’t come in”, even before it was an issue, which made me worry about something I hadn’t previously been concerned about. She also shared stories about postpartum depression and suicide, conversations that I personally found unnecessary and unsettling during my recovery. Finally, I felt she occasionally blurred professional boundaries by asking questions that I considered overly personal, such as the cost of our home or other financial matters. While I appreciated getting to know her, these questions made me uncomfortable. Overall, she cared for me well physically, but I would have benefited from a communication style that was more mindful of a mother’s emotional wellbeing and need for rest during the postpartum period.

Recommendation & Experience

She has several strengths that many families may appreciate. She is a capable cook with a wide repertoire, provides good postnatal massages, genuinely loves babies, and was caring and attentive during my immediate postpartum recovery. She is also easygoing and willing to accommodate the needs of the whole family.

However, our experience highlighted some significant shortcomings. We found her approach to confinement to be less traditional than we had expected, and there were areas where we felt greater planning, professionalism and attention to detail were needed. Most importantly, we experienced two serious safety incidents involving her falling asleep while bottle-feeding our newborn, which ultimately led us to end our arrangement early.

I would recommend having a thorough discussion with her before hiring to ensure your expectations are aligned, particularly regarding confinement practices, baby care standards, communication style, household etiquette and safety. Families who value flexibility and a less traditional approach may find her a suitable fit, but based on our experience, she was not the right fit for our family.
