Hamida knows what she is doing in the kitchen. I have food allergies, food sensitivities, some ingredients to avoid from the doctor, and I am a foreigner who likes a lot of Western dishes. None of that was a problem. She made dishes that suited what I needed (protein, veg, carbs). She made dishes that I would like (I love salads and she made some great ones with salmon and steak for me). She worked with us to pick out ingredients so we were a part of the process in what we ate. She also took requests alot. Honestly, if you ask for a dish she will figure out how to make it. She even made a Caribbean dish for me as I was craving some food from my culture. The food was delicious and we tried local dishes and even some other international ones like the Hong Kong toast. The taste was great and she is fast. She does not take hours and hours in the kitchen to prepare a meal so there is time for everything else in the day and also 3 good meals. She will stick to confinement rules like only soups and teas if you prefer but I did not want that and she worked with us to make meals that we enjoyed. We also added into the contract for family meals and she would make meals for my spouse that they loved as well or we would both eat the same thing. We had variety. I will say, it matters also the quality of the ingredients that you buy so we made sure to buy organic and good quality meats and she was so helpful in telling us the local spots to get the good ingredients from.

We do not have photos for this section because we asked that our baby not have any photos taken. We wanted privacy for our little one. Hamida honored that. If she took a photo for us (her camera was better) she would send us the photo and let us know later that she deleted it which was really nice and reassuring. Having no photos does not mean she did not take care of our child. The first few nights when our little one was crying, she knew it was gas and had an oil to help relieve the gas. We used that oil the entire confinement and bought more for post confinement. We couldn't figure out a cream to use for diaper rash and hoped she didn't get it. She had diaper rash, we had no cream on hand, and Hamida already had cream she brought with her just in case. We also then bought that product for post confinement. She knew when we needed to worry and take baby to the doctor or when we could make a change that would make our little one more comfortable. The knowledge she provides is not anecdotal or the sometimes outdated or generic advice you get from grandparents and family. It is relevant, useful, and knowledgeable (also backed with research). She knew formula brands that we should switch to when our baby was not doing well on the one we bought. She knew the cues of hunger versus gassy to help settle the baby faster. She bathed her (something we were too nervous to do), calmed her so many times, rocked her to sleep, checked on her in the middle of the night when she was crying to make sure we were all okay and settling her. She looked out for our daughter like a grandmother and we are grateful. When our baby had jaundice, she was worried too and wanted checkins when we went to the doctor. Our daughter would easily sleep after feedings in her arms and we were able to get some things done or just rest knowing Hamida had an eye on her.

Giving birth is a serious thing and postpartum has a lot of, "is this normal?". Hamida was able to put my mind at ease about a lot of things. Bleeding, rest, aches, pains, to a bunch of other little things that pop up, she knows from experience how to advise you. She won't give you a massage if you have low blood pressure because she knows the effects. She will skip certain confinement norms that would not work for you if you had a C-section. She knows what is good for you which is important when we are vulnerable after birth, and especially with this being our first child, there is so much I did not know. Confinement-wise, expect body massages, body scrubs, belly binding, herbal baths, and teas for recovery. You will enjoy them :). She will also help you figure out breastfeeding if that is what you want to do. She also saved me from engorgement and got me back to normal which was huge. I did not get to a place of needing antibiotics because she knew what to do. She helped us find better pumps, got me lactation cookies, and recommended drinks and ingredients that would help my milk supply. And she took care of the apartment so that I could rest. She did laundry for me and baby and she always took care of the kitchen. She would make sure I rested and kept track of where I was in my recovery to make sure I was doing okay. She asks questions and will check on you. And if you ask her anything, she has the answer on things from how long should I be bleeding to how much is my diastasis recti to just random things that will inevitably come up in postpartum. She also knows a lot of local information that helped us. We needed to go to Kuala Lumpur for immigration and she helped us get a car, knew where to eat while there, helped us navigate because we unfortunately do not speak Malay, and helped take care of baby going there and back.

I am grateful that I had Hamida during confinement. Becoming a parent is a huge transition and process to go through, and having someone who is nice to be around, great conversation, happy disposition, and also extremely knowledgeable and serious about their job makes the experience. I am a foreigner and my family is thousands of miles away. Hamida made sure I did not feel like I was alone in walking into motherhood. She supported me and my partner and our baby so well. Anything we mentioned we needed, she would figure out making it work. She was gentle with our baby and with us. She was serious with me when I needed to rest more but even that was not aggressive but caring. She loves what she does and our baby was comfortable with her (even through having new experiences like her first bath). There were some times where only Hamida could stop our baby from crying and we had to learn her techniques. She took the time to teach us which helped our confidence. It happens in the little ways but I know I have picked up skills that will help us after confinement to take even better care of our little one. We made a great choice having Hamida and thankfully she chose us too. Some people want the Confinement Nanny to take full care of the baby, sleep with them at night, and take care of them during the day so that mommy can rest which is great (there are many types of confinement). We wanted to be able to have help and guidance but also to figure out how to be parents as well. Hamida walked that line really well with us. We slept with baby every night but that did not stop her from knocking on the door or texting if everything was okay when she heard baby crying, even if it was 3 am. And on long cries, she would come in and help us figure out what was wrong no matter the time. I loved our couch chats about random things and we had a lot of laughter during our confinement which was nice. I will definitley miss her and am happy that we had our confinement experience with her.

Recommendation from my spouse:

I was a part of the confinement journey, and Hamida was wonderful in taking care of Ivanna but also paid attention to me and made me separate meals that I liked a lot, ordered outside food for me and took us to a restaurant for my favourite food. She went out of her way to make me feel part of everything and discussed baby and mommy plans with me as well. She also went out of her way to ask about my health and also gave me some advice (I have bad carpal tunnel and shoulder pains) to manage my health as well. She was very attentive and caring, and was very attuned to baby and to Ivanna which is everything I could ask for. She made the first month of baby's journey smooth and went with us to KL as well. I am confident with the baby because of her and could not recommend her more highly for first time parents!

I cared for Ms. Ivanna for 28 days. She and her partner gave me no trouble at all while I carried out my duties as a confinement lady; they were very understanding and easy to communicate with. She put into practice all the advice I gave regarding breastfeeding and baby care. They treated me without regard for our cultural differences, and I was deeply touched by how they would always remind me of prayer times.
